Beaks and ears

In recent weeks, a news has spread about the changes that animals are making to their bodies to cope with climate change. Scientists at Deakin University (Australia) have shown how in recent decades many animals have changed the width of their appendages (wings, beaks, tails, ears) to better disperse heat. While this may seem a simple observation of how evolution makes animals adapt to the increasing temperature, it is not without problems for them. For example, birds that develop larger beaks may have difficulty finding food in confined spaces, or small wild mammals that enlarge their ears may be more easily spotted by predators, such as rabbits by the fox we were talking about a few weeks ago.
The fact that animals can adapt does not mean that they will solve their problems about climate change, it has to be clear. It is our job to reduce global warming as much as possible, and we need to do it quickly. It’s a shame seeing nature suffering because of humans.

In queste settimane si è molto diffusa la notizia sulle modifiche che gli animali stano attuando ai loro corpi per affrontare l’aumento di temperatura del pianeta. Una ricerca degli scienziati della Deakin University, in Australia, ha dimostrato come negli ultimi decenni molti animali hanno modificato l’ampiezza delle loro propaggini (ali, becchi, code, orecchie) per disperdere meglio il calore. Sebbene questa possa sembrare una semplice constatazione di come l’evoluzione fa adattare gli animali ai cambiamenti del clima, non per tutti loro è priva di problemi. Ad esempio gli uccelli che sviluppano un becco più grosso possono avere difficoltà a trovare il cibo in spazi ristretti, oppure i piccoli mammiferi selvatici che ingrandiscono le proprie orecchie possono essere più facilmente avvistati dai predatori, come i conigli con la volpe di cui parlavamo qualche settimana fa.
Il fatto che gli animali si adattino non vuol dire che risolveranno i loro problemi legati al cambiamento climatico, questo deve essere chiaro. È nostro compito ridurre il più possibile il riscaldamento globale, e bisogna farlo in fretta. Non è giusto che la natura debba soffrire per colpa dell’uomo.
